Tips on how to set goals for students

These goal setting worksheets for kids are perfect to use that first week of school to help teach your students why goal setting is so important and how to accomplish those goals.

Talk through the below steps with your students to help achieve these long term or short term goals for the new school year.

1. Decide upon and write clear and realistic goals.

It’s important to discuss what makes a goal realistic. Is it achievable? An example of an unrealistic goal: I never want to get home. While a realistic goal would: I want to work on getting a homework pass.

Tip: It’s helpful to have one big goal. Branch other mini goals off that main goal. This important goal will help the student stay focused and accomplish the smaller goals that assist the larger.

Take it a step further and give deadlines to a goal. Even if it’s a mid-year goal deadline. Sometimes deadlines help move goals a long.

2. Create an action plan for the goal(s).

If a goal is to do well in Math. How will the student do this? Will the student make sure he/she completes all of their math homework. Will they ask big brother or sister for help? Give your students examples on how they can accomplish goals.

3. Don’t forget your goals!

Pull out your goal sheet and read them daily to help prepare and accomplish those goals.

4. Use time for reflection.

Talk about your accomplishments and/or what you still need to do to achieve the goals.

It’s always important to ask yourself if I am accomplishing these goals or completing any action items?

Teach smart goal setting

It’s always smarter to write down your plan. If you have a specific goal in mind a great way to achieve that goal is through action plans.

Use these goal setting worksheets for kids as part of a lesson plan around why it’s important to organize your wants and list out likes/dislikes of a topic by writing them down.

Accomplishing something is always more rewarding when it’s planned and worked for.
